ANNUAL AWARDS

Youth Sailing is a primary beneficiary of the Foundation.  In addition to Foundation support, there are seven Youth Sailing Awards and Trophies which are endowed to provide stipends, assisting the awardees in their future sailing pursuits.  These awards are supported by endowments which were generously contributed by individuals and families.

The Scott Harris Perpetual Memorial Trophy

2023 Recipient: Hailey Thompson

This award is given to a young adult sailor, between the ages of 18 and 24, who has exhibited outstanding sailing skills and good sportsmanship. The Harris Trophy has a cash component of $300. Perry Harris created this trophy in memory of his son, Scott, an avid young sailor, who unfortunately died in a sailing incident. The award has been administered for many years by The San Francisco Sailing Foundation, which liquidated and passed the role to The Belvedere Cove Foundation.

The Volker Dolch Award

2023 Recipient: Anthony Skerrett

Awarded annually to a young sailor who has shown great potential as a competitive sailboat racer. In addition to the honor, the Award carries with it a $1,000 cash component. Mai Dolch, the widow of the late Volker Dolch, member of the San Francisco Yacht Club and veteran cruiser with Mai aboard their lovely 56 foot catamaran, Dolce Vita, has created this award in 2007 to honor Volker.

The Thomas Martin Award

2023 Recipient: Mark Xu

This award is given to an outstanding junior sailor of the SFYC Junior Sailing Program, in the memory of Thomas Martin, an outstanding junior sailor in the program with a cash stipend of $300.

The Bob and Bettie Potter Award

2023 Recipient: Michele Biral

Given annually to the most improved youth sailor of The San Francisco Yacht Club between the ages of 10 and 18 who has demonstrated sustained dedication and improvement in the sport. The coaches and Youth Sailing Committee of the San Francisco Yacht Club select the recipient. The Potter Award trophy will be on permanent display at the San Francisco Yacht Club with each year’s recipient’s name engraved on it. The Belvedere Cove Foundation awards the perpetual trophy and $1,000 check, at its annual reception. This award has been created in memory of Bob and Bettie Potter, long-time members of the San Francisco Yacht Club, renowned racers and supporters of The San Francisco Yacht Club Youth Sailing program.

The Frank Hinman Jr. Award

2023 Recipient: Rhett Krawitt

Created in 2009 by The McBurney Foundation and the crew and friends of Frank to support educational or training programs for sailors preparing for or participating in competitive sailboat racing, or for scholarships or grants made directly to individuals or teams of individuals preparing for or participating in competitive sailboat racing. Frank Hinman raced his sailboats, named Gallant and Topgallant, under the burgee of the SFYC and usually won. This award has a cash award of $1000 to assist the recipient with their racing expenses.

The Patrick N. Thomson Memorial Trophy

2023 Recipients: Beckett Kern and Alexander Montagu

This award was established in 1990 to be presented to the participant in The San Francisco Yacht Club Youth Sailing Program who has achieved the outstanding record in competitive youth events during the summer session of the Youth Sailing Program each year. In addition to the honor of the Award, there is a cash component of $500.

The Winton Award

2023 Recipient: Tyler Yang

Given to an outstanding youth sailor who has demonstrated consistent sailing ability and sustained interest in the sport and is recognized by his or her peers and mentors as worthy of special recognition. The Winton Family has created this Award to honor the late Charles J. Winton, renowned sailor and Commodore of the San Francisco Yacht Club and it carries with it a $1,000 cash stipend intended to be used to advance the sailing career of the recipient.
